Veil of Veronica or Holy Face printed on what seems to be fabric and placed in a large frame. There is a wax seal from the Vatican at the front and at the back. A certificate of authenticity is attached at the back.
Such pieces were printed after the Miracle of the Holy Face in January 1849.
The Veil was exposed for prayers during a short time in 1849. On the third day it was shown (6th January 1849), the Miracle occured and Christ's face became more and more distinct on the Veil. It lasted three hours.  Drawings of the Face were made straight away. The printed copies were touched to Veronica's veil, to the relic of the True Cross and to the Spear. Some copies were made every year and sent to churches or important people.

The text in Latin at the front under the Image translates as :
'The True Image of the Sacred Face of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Which is religiously preserved and worshipped in Rome in the Sacred Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican.
Antonio Schiavoni, Rome Via della Minerva n°82 presso la Rotondae.'

The text on the certificate roughly translates as:
'The Holy Basilica
The  Chief of the apostles of the City,
I declare to all who will inspect the present Image that it is similar to the Most Holy Shroud of Veronica and I testify that I have reverently applied it to the same Shroud, printed on white cloth of the same length and width, and also to the Wood of the True Cross and the Spear of the Lord, which are most religiously preserved in our aforesaid Basilica, and are celebrated with the greatest veneration by many Diplomats of the Supreme Pontiffs and by the people. In whose faith I have sealed and subscribed the aforesaid Image and these present letters with my seal.
Dated from my house. In the year of our Lord 1887.
XV Indiction of the Pontificate of the Holy Father Leo XIII
Pontiff Max. in the year IX' (IX has been crossed. The XV before 'indiction' was added in ink)
There are two signatures in ink that are not easy to read.
The certificate is under glass and attached to the frame with the blue backing paper.
There is a label from a framer in Tours at the back too.

There are imperfections in the print as some white marks are visible towards the bottom of the image. It might be some damages done before framing.
Creases, discolouration and small stains are also visible. The wax seal at the front is not complete and has lost some small pieces (two are visible under the glass).
The thick gesso and wood frame is very ornate. It was painted black and gold.
It has some imperfections as such frames are very fragile: cracks, worn paint, stains, large chips and scratches. Some corners are damaged and some parts are missing. The paint is missing in places so the white gesso or a reddish paint are visible. Some damages have been repianted by a previous owner.
The glass has some scratches, marks and imperfections.
The blue paper backing has discoloured and is worn. Small tears visible.
Metal loop and rope at the back to display on a wall.
Size frame: approx. 53 x 42.3 cm / 20.86 x 16.53 inches. Depth approx. 5 cm / 1.96 inches
Thickness of frame approx. 8 cm / 3.14 inches.
Size opening: approx. 37 x 26.6 cm / 14.56 x 10.23 inches.
Weight approx. 2.5 kilograms.
This fantastic piece was bought in an antiques shop in Normandy and has been in my collection for almost ten years.
The pictures are part of the description.
