Beautiful and large antique depicition of Jesus on the cross in an oval frame with domed glass.
The large Corpus Christi seems to be made of limestone or calcareous stone and it is attached to a black painted wooden cross. The crucifix is on a brown velvet background.
The Corpus has discoloured with time and has some marks. Its colour is not even. Small lines and tiny imperfections.
The brown velvet has faded and is slightly discoloured. Marks in the pile of the velvet.
The background is not completely sealed at the edges. A small part of the velvet is not flat anymore.
The black painted frame has some large scratches, scuffing, stains and imperfections. The shine is gone in places.
There are long cracks visible all around. Some cracks are especially visible at the bottom of the frame (seen in a close-up photograph). There are some smaller cracks at the top too and some surface crackling.
The paint is worn and missing on the sides.
Several small holes at the back.
The glass has some marks and several deep scratches. There are some dust particles and marks visible at the back of the glass.
The paper backing is very worn and a lot is missing so the wood is visible. There is a gap at the back which probably allowed some dust inside.
There is a loop at the back so it's ready to be displayed on the wall. The loop is a bit rusty.
Some nails have been replaced at the back to secure the central part to the frame. Several rusty nails are still in place.
A hand written piece of paper is attached at the back. It is damaged and torn but we can still read in French that this frame was a First Holy communion souvenir. It was given to a child by his or her mother. It is dated 2nd July 1858 (I am not entirely sure about the last 8).
It is a fantastic place that would be perfect for a home altar after a little bit of care.
