Large antique St Joseph holding the Infant Jesus painted bisque porcelain statue.
Late 19th or early 20th century.
From France or Belgium.
It is beautifully detailed and the colours are still vivid.
It has some imperfections commensurate with age and use as can be seen in the pictures.
The colours have discoloured and faded. The gold of Jesus' orb is gone in small places.
The black paint around the base is damaged.
Joseph's lili staff has been broken. There is a white mark visible just under the remaining lillies where the stem was broken. Some paint or plaster seems to have been added to Joseph's hand to cover a break. Green paint marks from the stem are on his thumb.
The hand holding Jesus has two broken fingers.
The ornate base is glazed and has gilt details.
A flower on the base has one petal broken. The break was painted gold to be less visible.
The gilt has gone in places.
A beautiful, large but heavy piece!
Height 36.2 cm / 14.25 inches
Diameter at base approx. 14.5 cm / 5.70 inches
Weight 1.9 kilogram.
