Beautiful silver plated and embossed copper plaque depicting the Virgin Mary. It is mounted on a varnished wooden plaque with Art Nouveau details. There is a small Holy water font attached at the bottom.
The metal plaque is marked 'ER  Editr' (short for Editeur). A small name plaque between the portrait and the font indicates the name of the portrait and the name of the artist in French. It translates as 'Virgin of hope' by sculptor Lamourdedieu. Edited by E Rd Editeur.
Raoul Lamourdedieu (1877 - 1953) was a reknowned sculptor, engraver and medal maker. His last name translates as 'the love of God'!
The silver plating is gone in places so a copper colour is visible. It is very worn on other large places.
The halo behind Mary and parts of the flowers appear to have a gold tint so they might not have been silver originally. There are tarnish marks, stains and surface scratches. A thin line around the profile is lighter.
The font is made of a thicker metal and is gold and silver. The metal is very tarnished.
The receptacle has been used and is corroded and stained inside.
The varnish on the wood is not perfect. Brush strokes are visible (especially around the name plaque). Some varnish stains are visible inside the gaps of the wood at the top.
The Art Nouveau shapes of the wooden plaque are beautiful but some parts have been broken on the sides and at the bottom. There are some small chips at the edges.
The name plaque is very stained.
This plaque was originally meant to be displayed on a flat surface or a hung on the wall. The easel stand is gone as seen in the photographs. The loop at the top is still there though so it is ready to be displayed on a wall. That would be a wonderful addition to a home altar.
Size: approx. 37.2 x 23.7 cm / 14.56 x 9.05 inches.
Weight: 1.1 kilogram.
The pictures are part of the description.
