Beautiful high relief portrait of Christ signed Mattei. Louis Octave Mattei was a French sculptor and medal engraver in the late 19th / early 20th century.
This piece is a reproduction of his work and is made of limestone. It probably comes from the 'Fontaines pétrifiantes' in Saint Nectaire, France. It is a petrifying cave and the company 'Fontaines pétrifiantes' (or petrifying fountains) has used volcanic springs to make calcareous artworks for 2 centuries.
They still produce this model but with a different border.

It was orginally in a frame that looked from the mid-20th century but it was so damaged that I had to remove it. This piece could be used as a paperweight or be framed again.
Some imperfections such as discolouration, stains in places and small chips. The crown of thorns has several chips and marks.
