An incredible piece of handmade and homemade devotional Catholic art. Dates from the late 19th / early 20th century. Very rare to find one in this condition.

At its centre is a crucifix with tiny fragments of stone from Jerusalem for Stations of the Cross. The central sunburst/aureole is made of seashells. This is set on a padded red velvet cushion covered in gold embroidery, sequins and mother of pearl flowers affixed with pins.

Much of the red velvet has faded to orange and is incredibly delicate to touch (touching will leave red powder on fingertips). There is a tear in the velvet above the cross.
Some of the stitching is loosening at the edges. The edges were reinforced with red tape at some point and it is now peeling.
The pins and much of the gold-coloured decoration have mainly discolored black.

Dimensions 16.5 x 19.75 inches / 42 x 50cm
