French antique church banner made of cotton, paint and painted adhesive paper. From a convent in the south of France. This one has the initials for Jesus IHS.
The top of the banner is a solid wooden bar sewn into the fabric. A string to hang it has been attached at the top.
I have many other banners from the same convent. Most of them will have an inscription in ink at the back to identify the motif and the partly erased stamp from the convent.
Imperfections, such as stains or holes, commensurate with age and use are to be expected: - the paper is peeling or is damaged in places - the loop that are on most banners at the top has made holes or damages when the banner was rolled and stored. - staining - small holes and wear - asymetrical / irregular design
First half of the 20th Century.
