Antique metal discipline from the early 20th century.
From a monastery in the north of France according to the person I bought it from. He had a collection of cilices and disciplines and I bought several.
These tools of physical mortification helped to repent for sins.
 
Wood handle with metal hook to hang on the wall after use. Four groups of chains attached to the handle with a strong metal loop. Each group is made of 3 chains but some links are rattached all the way down so it is quite full at the end as seen in the photographs.
 
The total length laid flat including the end loop is  52 cm / 20.47  inches.
The chains are approx. 26 cm / 10.23 inches long.
Size of each chain link is approx. 4 x 1.2 cm / 1.57 x 0.39 inches. They are all slightly different and irregular.
Weight: 770 grams.
 
The metal has rusted all over as seen in the photographs.
The wood has signs of age as well: stains, worn parts, scratches and one small crack.
