French antique religious embroidery on lace-cut paper. Mary is represented in the centre. She is surrounded by a frame made of embroidered flowers.
The paper is beautifully cut all around to imitate lace.
There is some writing embroidered under Mary: "Hommage de reconnaissance à madame de Moncuit" and the date 1878. It translates as "Tribute of recognition to Madame de Moncuit".
'Ave Maria' is stitched above her head.Written at the back (partly visible): "Canvas sur bristol. Travail manuel enseigné par les Soeurs de Saint Jacut. XIXè siècle et début XX è siècle." It translates as "Canvas on bristol. Manual work taught by the Sisters of Saint Jacut. 19th century and early 20th century." Saint Jacut is a small village in Brittany, France. The paper at the back is partly torn.
The paper is a bit damaged at the edges. Some small pieces are gone. There are also some small marks and stains (around the blue flower at each corner and one at the bottom) . The paper has discoloured with age.
The piece was placed on a blue paper. It is not glued but a previous owner has attached it with a small piece of clear tape on each side.
It is placed under a plastic sheet and in a gold painted wood frame. The plastic is attached with small nails. I have left that to protect the embroidery during shipping as the paper is fragile. The palstic has discoloured and the frame is scratched and poorly made.
The next owner will be able to display it in a more appropriate and safer frame.Dimensions of the embroidered paper: approx. 39.6 x 37.7 cm / 15.35 x 14.56 inches
Size frame: 42 x 40 cm / 16.53 x 15.74 inches
